Description:
This workshop is designed to provide participants with an introduction to play therapy principles and an in-depth look at the foundational principles of the theoretical model of Child-Centered Play Therapy. Participants will examine the importance of focusing on the donut rather than the hole and why it is important to be a thermostat for clients. Most importantly, participants will examine how to interact with children in their native language of play.
Objectives:
- Participants of this workshop will assess the therapeutic powers of play and the history of play therapy through the development of Child-Centered Play Therapy.
- Participants of this workshop will identify Roger’s Six Necessary and Sufficient Conditions for Change.
- Participants of this workshop will assess the benefits and disadvantages of gathering background information on children engaged in Child-Centered Play Therapy.
- Participants of this workshop will identify the practice skills recommended for developing a therapeutic relationship with the child in Child-Centered Play Therapy.
- Participants of this workshop will demonstrate interpersonal-relationship themes in play therapy and their possible meaning to the child as described by Dr. Helen Benedict, RPT-S.
- Participants of this workshop will assess and practice the BASK Session Summary as a strategy to document Child-Centered Play Therapy session.
- Participants of this workshop will identify and demonstrate therapeutic responses and therapeutic limit setting utilized in Child-Centered Play Therapy.
- Participants of this workshop will identify typical stages of Play Therapy as described by Dr. Clark Moustakas.
- Participants of this workshop will assess the expectations of parents in parent consultation and identify the five components of the Child-Centered Parent Consultation Model.
- Participants of this workshop will assess the play of adjusted and maladjusted children, identify when termination is indicated in Child-Centered Play Therapy and assess the process of termination.
- Participants of this workshop will identify and experience a variety of directive expressive play therapy interventions, consider the intervention’s therapeutic value, as well as identify strategies to adapt the intervention in order to meet the unique needs of the client.

Workshop Withdrawal:
- The workshop login information will be provided by email five days prior to the workshop. The workshop powerpoint and supplies will be shipped to the participants one week prior to the workshop. For those of you who register within one week of the workshop, a list of supplies will be provided. CE Certificates are provided within 7 calendar days of the conclusion of the workshop to individuals who register, log-in, participate and complete the post-test in the live web-based workshop.
- Withdrawal requests should be submitted by email to heartlandpti@gmail.com no later than 7 calendar days prior to the scheduled workshop date in order to receive a full refund of the paid workshop fee. Withdrawal requests that are submitted after 7 calendar days prior to the scheduled workshop date will result in a refund of the paid workshop fee – with the exception of a $75 administrative fee.
- If a student does not log-in and participate in the workshop and does not submit a withdrawal request as outlined in the previous sections by the time the workshop is concluded, within 7 calendar days Heartland Play will issue a refund of the paid workshop fee – with the exception of a $150 administrative fee.
Workshop Cancellation:
- Heartland Play reserves the right to cancel a workshop due to insufficient enrollment. Heartland Play will email workshop students at least 5 calendar days in advance of the scheduled workshop date to notify students of the cancellation. Notice will be provided with the option to reschedule for a future course date or to receive a full refund of paid workshop fees.
- Heartland Play reserves the right to cancel a workshop due to inclement weather, instructor illness or instructor family emergency. If a workshop is canceled, students will be notified via e-mail prior to the workshop start time. Heartland Play will notify the students of a reschedule date for the workshop within 10 calendar days of the cancelled workshop. Notice will be provided with the option to reschedule for the future course date or to receive a full refund of the paid workshop fee.
