Play Therapy Documentation from your Theoretical Perspective – Live Webinar

Play Therapy Documentation from Your Theoretical Perspective – Day 1
Worksop Description:
How do you define yourself as a play therapist and how does this impact the way you document your work?  In this workshop participants will reflect on their practice, personality and cultural/social identity and utilize these reflections to develop a clear definition of a play therapy identity.  With this identity intact, participants will consider the purpose and function of documentation in their practice.  Documentation considerations will be reviewed for assessments, treatment planning and case notes.

Workshop Objectives:

  1. Complete at least 3 self-assessment tools to utilize personal insight in defining their identity as a play therapist.
  2. Analyze one’s cultural & social identity and it’s influence on defining their identity as a play therapist.
  3. Identify the play therapy practice setting and consider the documentation requirements for each setting.
  4. Consider and compare specific projective play assessments and how to process and gather further information with children for individual and family therapy.
  5. Examine ways to incorporate play therapy approaches into goal setting as part of their therapeutic treatment plan.
  6. Consider their play therapy practice setting and the implications it has on documentation in their play therapy practice.
  7. Complete and share a structured and non-structured play therapy case note.

Neurodiversity in the Playroom – Day 2
Workshop Description
Go beyond diagnostic labels and explore how to support neurodivergent children through a neurodiversity-affirming play therapy approach. In this experiential workshop, participants will apply play therapy theories and interventions to work with children with Autism Spectrum Disorder and ADHD. The impact of sensory processing differences on the play therapy experience will be explored, along with practical strategies for adapting interventions and playroom environments. Participants will also have the opportunity to share playroom photos and receive feedback on creating inclusive, affirming spaces that align with 2025 APT standards.

Workshop Objectives:

  1. Review the diagnostic criteria and identify common presenting symptoms of Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) through a play therapy lens.
  2. Examine a play therapy case example of a child with ASD and identify developmentally appropriate play therapy interventions aligned with neurodiversity-affirming practice.
  3. Review the diagnostic criteria and identify common presenting symptoms of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) through a play therapy lens.
  4. Analyze a play therapy case example of a child with ADHD and select play therapy interventions that support regulation, connection, and engagement.
  5. Define the primary sensory processing systems and experientially process how these systems impact the play therapy experience of neurodiverse child clients.
  6. Discuss how sensory processing differences inform the planning and adaptation of play therapy interventions for neurodivergent clients.
  7. Examine key components of a neurodiversity-affirming play therapy environment and identify specific strategies to adapt playrooms to support the sensory, emotional, and relational needs of neurodivergent child clients.
