Neurodiversity in Action: Enhancing ADHD Support through Child-Centered Play Therapy – Live Webinar/Kansas City
Description:
Children with an Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) diagnosis often experience variations in attention, impulse control, and self-regulation that shape their social, emotional, and behavioral development. This workshop aims to equip play therapists with developmentally informed, neurodiversity-affirming ways of understanding and supporting these children. Participants will examine key developmental and executive-function features of ADHD and explore how the Child-Centered Play Therapy (CCPT) framework, including the therapeutic relationship, attuned responding, and therapeutic limit-setting, can be meaningfully integrated into their work. In the workshop, participants will apply CCPT skills to common ADHD-related play behaviors and themes. Through real case examples and group discussions, they will develop case conceptualizations and considerations responsive to children with an ADHD diagnosis and leave with practical strategies to incorporate into their play therapy practice.
Workshop Objectives:
- Identify and describe the developmental features of ADHD in early to middle childhood.
- Articulate how the CCPT framework can be applied to conceptualize ADHD.
- Reflect on and identify at least two therapist conditions that impede or strengthen their work with neurodivergent child clients.
- Integrate at least three considerations when working with children with an ADHD diagnosis in CCPT.
- Identify research evidence supporting the use of CCPT for children with an ADHD diagnosis.
- Identify resources to support children with ADHD in school settings.
