The family unit is where a child first learns how to belong. Oftentimes family dynamics can be complicated and complex. We will focus this class on the unique dynamics experienced by blended and divorced families. In this fun and interactive play therapy workshop, you will learn to reduce tensions, disarm and connect family members, and use creative activities to engage family members during individual and family play therapy through an Adlerian play therapy perspective. Participants will leave confident in their ability to conduct Adlerian family play therapy sessions designed to help family members improve interactions, increase satisfaction within relationships, and create more positive shared experiences. We will explore play therapy activities you can use to explore each family members’ individual lifestyle and the lifestyle of the family unit. Play therapists know that it is important to partner with parents in the play therapy process, yet oftentimes we come up with so many reasons not to include parents. In this class, we will identify barriers to effective parent consultation and come up with a plethora of reasons why we, as play therapists, need to incorporate parent consultation as a regular component of our play therapy practice, especially in our work with blended families. We will teach and practice Adlerian play therapy conceptualization and treatment planning and identify and confront mistaken beliefs that clients often have related to blended and divorced families as well as engaging parents in the play therapy process.
Workshop Objectives:
- Participants of this workshop will describe 4 interventions that align with the 4 phases of Adlerian play therapy that will help support clinical work with blended and divorced families.
- Participants of this workshop will explain 3 of the 5 basic concepts of Adlerian theory and how they are relevant to play therapy with blended and divorced families.
- Participants of this workshop will identify at least 3 unique concerns that bring blended families into the play therapy room.
- Participants of this workshop will list at list four barriers that keep play therapists from doing parent consultation.
- Participants of this workshop will list the four phases in parent consultation in Adlerian play therapy.
- Participants of this workshop will explain how to conceptualize individual family members and the family as a whole from an Adlerian play therapy perspective.

Workshop Cancellation:
- Cancellation requests should be submitted by email to Heartlandpti@gmail.com no later than 7 calendar days prior to the scheduled workshop date in order to receive a full refund of the paid workshop fee. Cancellation and/or rescheduled requests that are submitted after 7 calendar days prior to the scheduled workshop date will result in a refund of the paid workshop fee – with the exception of a $25 administrative fee for a half-day workshop, a $50 administrative fee for a full-day workshop a $75 administrative fee for 2-day workshop.
- Heartland Play reserves the right to cancel a workshop due to insufficient enrollment. Heartland Play will email workshop students at least 5 calendar days in advance of the scheduled workshop date to notify students of the cancellation. Notice will be provided with the option to reschedule for a future course date or to receive a full refund of paid workshop fees.
- Heartland Play reserves the right to cancel a workshop due to inclement weather, instructor illness or instructor family emergency. If a workshop is canceled, students will be notified via e-mail prior to the workshop start time. Heartland Play will notify the students of a reschedule date for the workshop within 10 calendar days of the cancelled workshop. Notice will be provided with the option to reschedule for the future course date or to receive a full refund of the paid workshop fee.
