Beyond Gender: Inclusive Play Therapy for Children and Families – Live Webinar
Description:
You’ve built a foundational understanding of the LGBTQIA+ community—but how do you translate that knowledge into developmentally responsive, affirming play therapy? This workshop takes a deeper dive into what it means to provide compassionate, evidence-informed care for children and adolescents who are exploring and navigating their identities. Participants will examine a variety of therapeutic theories and treatment approaches, including a discussion of practices that may be harmful or contraindicated when working with LGBTQIA+ clients. The workshop will also explore gender-affirming care across developmental stages, providing clinicians with a greater understanding of available options and increasing confidence in supporting children, adolescents, and their families as they make informed decisions that align with their values and needs.
Workshop Objectives:
- Recognize and demonstrate the use of culturally responsive and affirming language when working with LGBTQIA+ children, adolescents, and their families within and beyond the play therapy setting.
- Differentiate between conversion therapy and evidence-based, affirming therapeutic approaches, and identify play therapy interventions that promote the well-being of LGBTQIA+ clients.
- Examine the role of gender-affirming care across developmental stages and the coming out process to enhance clinical decision-making and family support.
- Explore the impact of religious and cultural trauma on LGBTQIA+ clients and apply trauma-informed play therapy interventions that foster healing and resilience.
- Examine the psychological and developmental effects of bullying, discrimination, and minority stress on LGBTQIA+ children and adolescents, and apply play therapy interventions to promote coping and emotional well-being.
- Demonstrate a variety of developmentally appropriate play therapy interventions designed to support LGBTQIA+ children, adolescents, and their families in creating affirming, inclusive therapeutic experiences.
