Description:

Would you be willing to tell me a little bit about your day? It was fine.

Was there anything that made you happy today? Not really.

Was there anything you thought was really boring? No.

Did anything challenge you today? Nope.

Is there anything specific you’d like to talk about today? Na bro, I’m good.

If you’ve ever had a conversation like this with a teenage client, you are not alone. Building on a solid understanding of adolescent development, this workshop helps clinicians enter an adolescent’s world and engage them with playful therapeutic strategies that honor their unique life stage and individual needs.

Objectives:

  1. Participants of this workshop will examine adolescent identity development and how it is influenced by play therapy and the group process.
  2. Participants of this workshop will identify risk factors and protective factors relative to adolescence through the play therapy lens.
  3. Participants of this workshop will develop strategies for helping parents and caregivers better understand how to relate to their adolescent in productive and playful ways.
  4. Participants of this workshop will examine basic brain development and identify the changes that occur in the brain during adolescence and how this can affect treatment planning in the play therapy and/or group setting.
  5. Participants of this workshop will examine how trauma during adolescence affects brain development, and will learn to utilize play therapy interventions to describe this impact to the adolescent client and help mediate symptoms.
  6. Participants of this workshop will examine the impact of culture in play therapy with adolescents, and will learn tools for understanding and assessing a client’s cultural identity development.
  7. Participants will examine clinical needs that are unique to adolescents and develop skills for addressing these needs through play therapy interventions.
  8. Participants of this workshop will create a list of the play therapist’s duties and responsibilities as a group facilitator during various stages of group development.
  9. Participants of this workshop will explore the roles group members may assume at various points in the group process and increase their skills for managing hindering roles through a play therapy lens.
  10. Participants of this workshop will select play therapy interventions that are appropriate for various stages of group development.
  11. Participants of this workshop will examine the ethics in play therapy with adolescents in individual, family, and group contexts.
