Cognitive Behavioral Play Therapy – Kansas City
Cognitive Behavioral Play Therapy
6701 W. 64th Street, Suite 110
Overland Park, Kansas 66202
Description:
Adolescence can be one of the most challenging developmental stages to navigate in therapy —where identity exploration, emotional intensity, and social pressures collide. Traditional talk therapy often falls short, leaving adolescents disengaged or resistant. Cognitive Behavioral Play Therapy (CBPT) offers a dynamic, evidence-based approach that bridges the gap by combining the structure of CBT with the creativity and safety of play. Through hands-on activities, case examples, and practical demonstrations, attendees will leave equipped with fresh tools and strategies to re-energize their work with adolescents—making therapy both meaningful and engaging.
Objectives:
- Describe the historical development of Cognitive Behavioral Play Therapy (CBPT) and its core components as they relate to adolescents in the playroom.
- Analyze the unique developmental and clinical needs of adolescents that influence their engagement in play therapy.
- Identify and explain evidence-based CBPT interventions designed to address adolescent needs such as autonomy, identity exploration, and emotional regulation.
- Demonstrate specific play-based cognitive and behavioral techniques that enhance therapeutic engagement and skill-building with adolescents.
- Apply CBPT methods to common adolescent concerns including anxiety, depression, trauma, and peer-related stressors.
- Evaluate the effectiveness of CBPT strategies in meeting treatment goals with adolescents.
- Design developmentally appropriate CBPT activities that integrate cognitive, behavioral, and play-based approaches for use in clinical practice.
